Peace Mother and Child . . . “Peace Mother and Child” is the symbol for Generations for Peace, originally appearing on the letterhead of the organization. Chosen by founder John Whiteneck, the painting symbolizes the cause of world peace through the devotion of a praying mother. Whiteneck chose this because it was his mother who wore a prayer covering much like that worn by the mother in the portrait. In his childhood, Whiteneck learned the pacifist ways of the Church of the Brethren from his mother, and ultimately, the meaning of peace. Whiteneck commissioned artist Richard H. Wiley, of Lake Oswego, Oregon, to paint “Peace Mother and Child.” Wiley was inspired by the thought that he might create a greatening influence in art helping to make the world safe for little children. He drew upon these concepts to create the portrait: “The darkened world; The star of hope; The world on fire; and security of a child in the calm, nearness and love of a praying mother.” “Peace Mother and Child” was created in prayer and dedicated to the great cause of world peace. The logo has since changed but the spirit of protection and peace lives on through Generations for Peace. Peace Prayer . . . Lead me from death to life Great Britain, 1981 |
